Trainee Bus Driver

Location: Holt and North Walsham

We are re-opening applications for our popular training school, offering fully funded and supported training towards obtaining a vocational driving licence and Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).

This is your chance to trade your boring 9 to 5 for a career that really does take you places! You’ll enjoy scenic coastal views of North Norfolk from a modern well equipped vehicle, transporting our customers courteously and safely to their destination. You will know your shifts by following a rota, and benefit from a variety of rest days including both weekdays and weekends.

As soon as you pass your test, you benefit from a pay increase to our standard bus driver rate of £13.50 an hour, with enhancements to £14.25 on Sundays and a bonus payment of £2.00 per hour for any additional shifts you work. After five years service, a further enhancement of 25p an hour is added.

The role always suits individuals with a background in customer service. Experience driving vehicles larger than a car is always advantageous - perhaps you are currently a supermarket delivery driver, or drive a school minibus.

The training package is completely free on the basis of two year's service - there really is nothing to pay! We arrange all the steps for you along the way and support you throughout.

Benefits include:

Fully funded training
Free travel for you, your spouse and any school aged children*
Pension (after qualifying period)
28 days paid holiday
Earning potential of over £30,000 per annum
Long service pay enhancement
Relaxed family business
Opportunities for career progression

Essential entry requirements:

We will only consider applications with a CV showing a proven track record of customer service. You will also need to be able to meet the following criteria:
• Aged 18 or over with no more than six points on your licence
• Must be able to meet the DVLA medical requirements for obtaining a vocational licence
• Must be able to obtain a Norfolk County Council enhanced DBS check
• Must be able to fulfil the requirements of the rota - including a mix of weekends, early starts and late finishes
• Must be able to reliably commute to and from work

Throughout the course of the training process you will need to demonstrate sufficient progress is being made and meet training targets.

Could this be you?

The training process - what is required?

To obtain a full Category D PCV licence there are a number of preliminary steps required and five tests to pass:
• DVLA Medical Examination
• Theory Test
• Hazard Perception Test
• CPC Case Studies Test
• Reverse Manoeuvre Test
• CPC First Use Check Demonstration
• Driving Test

You will first need to attend a Medical Examination to ensure you are fit, healthy and meet the DVLA's requirements for obtaining a vocational licence. This is paid for by us and will usually be an evening appointment in Norwich.

On completion of your medical, if the specialist believes you to meet the requirements you will attach their report (Form D4) to your provisional licence application (Form D2) and send this to the DVLA. Wait patiently to receive notification of your entitlement being added to your licence - it usually takes two weeks but can be longer if any further medical enquiries are required.

Whilst you wait, we will provide you with access to an online training platform to begin revising for your Theory Test and Hazard Perception Test. This is easily accessible on either a smart phone, tablet or computer and allows us to track your progress as you learn the content required to pass the tests.

Once you receive your provisional licence, we will be able to make a booking for you to take your Theory Test, Hazard Perception Test and CPC Case Studies Test. These take place at the DVLA's test centre in Norwich. If you pass, we can then progress you to the next stage and offer you a start date to join the training school.

In training school, you'll be behind the wheel of a dedicated training coach under the careful watch and instruction of our experienced trainer. You will be taught all the necessary driving skills to meet the standard to pass a driving test, as well as the knowledge to pass your CPC First Use Check Demonstration and complete the Reverse Manoeuvre. It will usually take around ten days to get you to test standard.

How do I apply?

Spaces are very limited, you will need to apply via email to [email protected] attaching a CV and Covering Letter with a proven track record of meeting all the above criteria and we can only accept applications which include all of this.

If your initial application is accepted you will be offered an interview to ensure you are the correct fit the job and that we are able to train you to the required standards.

Good luck!
